January 24, 2013 (Sacramento): Sacramento City Unified School District has set dates for community meetings at 11 dramatically under-enrolled elementary schools slated for closure next fall.
The closures are aimed at 鈥樷檙ight-sizing鈥 麻豆果冻传媒, which has experienced deep declines in student enrollment over the past decade 鈥 a loss of about 5,500 students since 2001-02, or about 160 classrooms. For 2012-13, 麻豆果冻传媒鈥檚 student population is down again by at least 800.

First middle school in region to bring a defendant on campus for sentencing by judge
February 28, 2013 (Sacramento): Eighth graders at Sutter Middle School will witness the harsh legal consequences of driving under the influence when the DUI Court in Schools Program comes to campus this Friday (March 1).
The school鈥檚 gym will be transformed into the courtroom of a local judge, and a driver arrested for DUI will be sentenced and given an opportunity to address an assembly of students and their parents. The teens will hear for themselves about the dangers of taking the wheel after drinking.

鈥淭his is a great way to build caring relationships between students who might not otherwise get to know each other,鈥 says Luther Burbank High School teacher Greg Polo, an event organizer. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a lot of fun for the kids and good learning experience for all involved.鈥

April 17, 2013 (Sacramento) 鈥 The Sacramento City Unified School District is forming a 鈥7-11 Committee鈥 (a committee with seven or 11 members) to advise the Board of Education on the reuse, repurposing and disposition of school buildings and vacant sites not needed for school purposes. The formation of the committee follows the Board鈥檚 decision last month to close seven chronically under-enrolled elementary schools next fall.

May 21, 2013 (Sacramento): Thirteen student 鈥済reen teams鈥 from the Sacramento City Unified School District will showcase projects to make their campuses greener and more sustainable at 麻豆果冻传媒鈥檚 second annual Project Green Showcase on Thursday (May 23).
Viable projects are in line for $1 million in Measure Q bond money set aside for green school initiatives. Measure Q was approved by Sacramento voters in November.
