Providing accessible and comprehensive HIV prevention services to youth

Virtual Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Program

Our trained group聽of pediatric and adolescent providers provides accessible and comprehensive HIV prevention services, including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), to adolescents and young adults up to 25 years old.

What is PrEP?

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a daily pill that reduces your chance of getting聽HIV by more than 99 percent. It鈥檚 important to take PrEP daily so that it is most effective. It鈥檚 also important to always use condoms as PrEP does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections or pregnancy.

Who is eligible for PrEP?

Anyone who is at risk (or has an anticipated risk) for HIV infection should consider taking PrEP. Some people at risk for HIV infection include: anyone with an HIV+ partner or partners of unknown HIV status, men who have sex with men, transgender men and women, and people who inject drugs. Your provider will help you to understand whether PrEP might be right for you.

How often will I need to see my PrEP doctor?

Once you are on PrEP, you will follow up with your PrEP doctor about every three months. You will also get routine urine and blood tests at your local laboratory.

What are virtual visits? And why might I prefer a virtual visit for my PrEP visit?

Virtual visits聽are very similar to regular clinic visits鈥攚ithout having to travel to the clinic. You have a video call with your doctor at a dedicated appointment time using your mobile device or computer. As long as you are within California, we are able to provide care to you, even if you go to college or move.
