Seths Law tightens anti-bullying policies in California schools by ensuring that all schools have clear and consistent policies and by establishing timelines for investigating claims of bullying. AB 9 will help create a respectful and safe environment for all students. AB 9 would ensure that every school in California implements updated anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policies and programs that include actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity and expression, as well as race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, disability, and religion. It would also empower students and parents to know what their rights are and how to advocate for them. Status: Introduced on December 6, 2010. Passed California Assembly Education Committee on April 13, 2011 on a 7-3 vote. Passed by the Assembly Appropriations Committee on May 27, 2011 on a 12-5 vote. Passed by the Assembly on June 1, 2011 on a 52-26 vote. Passed by the Senate Committee on June 22, 2011 on a 7-2 vote. Passed by the full Senate on September 1, 2011 on a 24-14 vote. Passed by the Assembly on September 7, 2011 on a 53-26 vote. Signed by Governor Jerry Brown. Author: Assemblymember Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco) Principle Co-Author: Assemblymember Mariko Yamada (D-Davis) FAIR Education Act From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Fair, Accurate, Inclusive, and Respectful Education Act, also known as the FAIR Education Act (Senate Bill 48) and informally described by media outlets as the LGBT History Bill, is a California law which compels the inclusion of the political, economic, and social contributions of persons with HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disabilities" \o "Disabilities" disabilities and HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT" \o "LGBT" lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people into educational textbooks and the social studies curricula in California public schools by amending the California Education Code. It also revises the previous designation of "black Americans, American Indians, Mexicans, Asians, [and] Pacific Island people" in that list into " HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indigenous_peoples_of_the_Americas" \o "Indigenous peoples of the Americas" Native Americans, HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_Americans" \o "African Americans" African Americans, HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_Americans" \o "Mexican Americans" Mexican Americans, HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_Americans" \o "Asian Americans" Asian Americans, HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Islanders" \o "Pacific Islanders" Pacific Islanders, and HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Americans" \o "European Americans" European Americans". It would also amend an existing law by adding HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_orientation" \o "Sexual orientation" sexual orientation and HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion" \o "Religion" religion into a list of characteristics (which already includes HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_(classification_of_humans)" \o "Race (classification of humans)" race, HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnicity" \o "Ethnicity" ethnicity, HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationality" \o "Nationality" nationality, HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender" \o "Gender" gender, and HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disability" \o "Disability" disability) that schools are prohibited from sponsoring negative activities about or teaching students about in an adverse way. In particular, according to chief author Sen. HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Leno" \o "Mark Leno" Mark Leno, it "ensures that the historical contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are accurately and fairly portrayed in instructional materials by adding LGBT people to the existing list of under-represented cultural and ethnic groups already included in the states inclusionary education requirements." The bill was introduced into the Senate on December 13, 2010, and was finally passed 23-14 on April 14, 2011. The bill was then passed by the Assembly on July 5 by a vote of 49-25. Governor HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Brown" \o "Jerry Brown" Jerry Brown, who has historically opposed HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Proposition_8_(2008)" \o "California Proposition 8 (2008)" Proposition 8 and has generally supported LGBT rights in the state, signed the bill into law on July 14. Governor Brown said however that state textbooks probably would not be updated to reflect the requirements of the law until 2015. ! ? @ A H & U i {gggP62hh95CJ(KH$OJPJQJ\aJ(mH sH ,h5CJ$KH$OJPJQJ\aJ$mH sH &hh5CJOJPJQJ\aJhCJOJQJaJmH sH $hhCJOJQJaJmH sH hhCJOJPJQJaJ hYrhCJOJPJQJaJ&hYrh5CJOJPJQJ\aJ'hh5CJ$OJPJQJ^JaJ$.hh5CJ$KH$OJPJQJ\^JaJ$ ! @ A T }}ppppp}} $da$gd dgdTkd$$If0+ BB tg 634Baytd$Ifgdddd$@&If[$\$gd T U } $ddd[$\$a$gd$ddd[$\$a$gd9 dgd9ddx@&[$gdddd@&[$\$gd9 dgd (k|=>JKPQGHXY[\*+-.}~STfgIJRSƯƯƯƯƯƯƯƯƯƯ,hh9>*B*OJPJQJmH phsH )jhh9OJPJQJUmH sH &hh95OJPJQJ\mH sH hh9OJPJQJmH sH EGHQRTU=>12;<12;< -. ±±± hhOJPJQJmH sH hh9OJPJQJmH sH ,hh9>*B*OJPJQJmH phsH )jhh9OJPJQJUmH sH 321h:p/ =!"#$% i$$If!vh#v*#v=:V tg 6,534Bytj 666666666vvvvvvvvv666666>6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666hH6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666662 0@P`p2( 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p8XV~ OJPJQJ_HmH nH sH tH J`J Normal dCJ_HaJmH sH tH h@h 9 Heading 1ddd@&[$\$"5CJ0KH$OJPJQJ\^JaJ0DA D Default Paragraph FontRi@R 0 Table Normal4 l4a (k ( 0No List VoV 9Heading 1 Char"5CJ0KH$OJPJQJ\^JaJ04U`4 90 Hyperlink >*ph`^@` 90 Normal (Web)ddd[$\$CJOJPJQJ^JaJR@"R 90 Balloon Text dCJOJQJ^JaJNo1N 90Balloon Text CharCJOJQJ^JaJPK![Content_Types].xmlN0EH-J@%ǎǢ|ș$زULTB l,3;rØJB+$G]7O٭V$ !)O^rC$y@/yH*񄴽)޵߻UDb`}"qۋJחX^)I`nEp)liV[]1M<OP6r=zgbIguSebORD۫qu gZo~ٺlAplxpT0+[}`jzAV2Fi@qv֬5\|ʜ̭NleXdsjcs7f W+Ն7`g ȘJj|h(KD- dXiJ؇(x$( :;˹!
