Principal Bulletin Action Required

March 31, 2023 is this year鈥檚 Trans Day of Visibility. This day was established as an international celebration of transgender people, recognizing their contributions as well as raising awareness about the unique challenges and discrimination that they face too often. This resolution formally recognizes the District鈥檚 observance of Trans Day of Visibility and elevates the support and care we provide our transgender students, staff and families. 

In accordance with the resolution, we are asking school site leaders to take the following steps:

Per Resolution No. 3310 all school sites must:

1. Post Resolution & LGBTQ Rights Flyer and Designate Your Site鈥檚 LGBTQ Liaison.

  • The District鈥檚 Communications Office is preparing a notice/poster for all school sites to post in the main office (coming soon). 
  • This notice will come from Central Printing and be addressed to the principal.
  • Each site will have a staff member serve as the school鈥檚 LGBTQ liaison. Most schools already have an on-site support center staff who will serve in this role by default. For schools that do not, the principal may take on the role or assign another staff member. The function of the school liaison is simply to be a trusted person on campus to connect LGBTQ students and staff to district support and health services.
  • There is a space on the notice/poster where you should write in the name(s) of your site鈥檚 liaison. 

2. District staff will notify after-school providers and other vendors, service providers and contractors of this Resolution within 30 days and require them to abide by the anti-discrimination provisions in it.

  • This responsibility does not fall on site leaders. Central office staff will make all the necessary notifications to service providers, contractors, and vendors and be responsible for ensuring all future contracts include information about this policy.

Board Policy 5145.31 鈥 Transgender And Gender Non-Conforming Students

  • Originally adopted in 2013 and revised in 2019, BP 5145.31 outlines the responsibilities of school sites in supporting transgender and gender  non-conforming students.  麻豆果冻传媒 employees are responsible for following the federal and state laws and board policies:  
  • Students and staff shall be referred to by their affirmed name, gender and pronouns. 
  • Students have the right to access the gender segregated facilities that align with their gender identity (i.e. restrooms, locker rooms)
  • Students have the right to freely access gender-neutral facilities, such as single stall restrooms. Each single-stall restroom is to be clearly labeled as 鈥済ender neutral,鈥 鈥渁ll gender,鈥 etc. 
  • On overnight field trips, students have the right to access the sleeping quarters that align with their gender identity.
  • Students have the right to participate in sports consistent with their gender identity.
  • Students and staff have the right to use their affirmed name, gender and pronouns in yearbooks and other non-legal school documents (e.g., school ID, class roster, diplomas and other certificates).
  • Students and staff may follow the dress code rules of the gender with which they identify.

Staff Training to Supporting Students Identifying as LGBTQ+ 

In August 2022, staff were provided training to support students who identify as LGBTQ+.  The online training module, Kognito鈥檚 鈥淪tep In, Speak Up!鈥 remains available for staff to review and/or complete.

The online training module helps staff understand the challenges that LGBTQ students face and allows staff to practice techniques for creating a supportive environment by engaging in role-play scenarios with virtual students. After completing the simulation, staff will be better equipped to: recognize the needs and obstacles of LGBTQ students; promote a 鈥渟afe space鈥 with effective classroom management techniques; initiate a conversation about sensitive topics, such as bullying; know when and how to ask a student if they are thinking about suicide.

In order to access the online Kognito simulations follow the directions below.

  • Step 1: Visit
  • Step 2: Log in or create a new account
  • Step 3: Launch the Step In, Speak Up simulation. You will also have access to all of the At-Risk simulations, should you be interested and/or want to complete additional simulations. You may start and stop the simulation anytime and will be able to pick back up where you stopped.
  • Step 4: Complete the ending evaluation, which will automatically generate your certificate of completion. The system will electronically track your certificate and indicate you have met the state law mandate. You do not have to submit anything further to the district.
