Students, Firefighters to 鈥楻etire鈥 Old Glory at Flag Day Assembly
The tattered and faded American flag that has flown over Leonardo da Vinci K-8 School for years will be 鈥渞etired鈥 on Flag Day (Tuesday, June 14) in a ceremony featuring firefighters, local scouting troops and patriotic music.
The Flag Day Assembly, which will include a ceremonial burning of the flag, will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 14, at Leonardo da Vinci K-8 School, 4701 Joaquin Way. Students, firefighters from Sacramento Fire Station #12 and local Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts will assist in the proceedings. Ashes from the flag will be scattered over the school鈥檚 garden.
Additionally, members of the Sons of the American Revolution 鈥 dressed in Revolutionary War-era uniforms 鈥 will serve as color guard.
鈥淭his is an important assembly for our children because it provides them with a rare opportunity to observe the proper way to retire a flag that has become too old to fly,鈥 said assembly coordinator Carol Toyama, who is da Vinci鈥檚 office manager.
