Soon-to-be-closed school hosts 鈥楲egacy Day鈥� for community
Alumni of Freeport Elementary are invited to share memories and more at Saturday鈥檚 event
June 7, 2012 (Sacramento): Since its opening in 1954, Freeport Elementary School has prepared generations of South Sacramento children for success in school and life.
As the neighborhood aged and children grew up and moved away, however, the school struggled to keep up its enrollment. Due to the dwindling number of students, the Sacramento City Unified School District鈥檚 Board of Trustees voted to close the campus next fall.
Before the doors close a final time, and to celebrate the school鈥檚 58-year history, staff is hosting a 鈥淟egacy Day鈥� on Saturday with a memory wall, carnival games, arts and crafts and more. Current Freeport families and alumni are invited to attend and share stories.
鈥淲e want to honor all that this school has meant to this community over the decades,鈥� said Principal Amy Whitten. 鈥淔or so many people, Freeport was the place that life-long friendships were formed and scholastic careers launched.鈥�
Neighbor Rose Earp, whose children and grandchildren attended Freeport 鈥� and whose great-grandchildren currently go to the school 鈥� said the campus has served as a safe haven for community kids. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been there for so many years and so many kids have gone there,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 wish it would stay open.鈥�
Most Freeport students will attend John Still K-8 School in
September.
