When to Keep Your Child Home from School
Guidance for Common Signs and Symptoms of Illness

Overview

Children should attend school every day and may attend school with mild or improving symptoms.  This guidance, based on CDPH recommendations, will help you decide whether your child is too sick to attend school.

If your child has symptoms that prevent them from participating meaningfully in school please keep your child at home.  Otherwise follow the symptom guidance below to decide whether they can attend school. A doctor’s note is generally not required to return to school.

Information on School Requirements and Where to Get Immunizations

Overview

Staying current with immunizations is a valuable tool in protecting your child from dangerous diseases.   It is also an essential component of preparing for school and meeting California Immunization Requirements for School Entry.

Vaccines are free to all children through their health insurance or through public programs such as Medi-Cal and CHDP.  Whenever possible, students should receive vaccines during their annual physical exam with their healthcare provider.
