May 23, 2012 (Sacramento):  State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson will appear at Kit Carson Middle School鈥檚 Annual Career Day on Friday (May 25) after a 14-year-old 4.0 GPA student, who emigrated with her mother from Costa Rica in 2008, asked California鈥檚 schools chief to attend.

Rebeca Corrales wrote Torlakson a letter in which she credited Kit Carson Principal Charlie Watters and the school鈥檚 teachers and staff for helping her and asked California鈥檚 top educator to attend Friday鈥檚 event.

May 30, 2012 (Sacramento):  Despite deep state funding cuts that have forced the near elimination of traditional summer school, Sacramento City Unified School District is expanding its innovative 鈥淪ummer of Service鈥� program for teens.

鈥淪ummer of Service鈥� combines community service and project-based learning with a traditional 鈥渂ridge鈥� program aimed at easing the sometimes scary transition to middle and high school. Last year, about 800 麻豆果冻传媒 kids participated in the program.

May 28, 2012 (Sacramento):  Sacramento City Unified School District is working to close achievement gaps and lower the drop-out rate for urban boys with its new Men鈥檚 Leadership Academy at American Legion, C.K. McClatchy and John F. Kennedy high schools.
